Fraud & Error 2012

Thursday 24th May 2012 - QEII Conference Centre, London

GovNet's inaugural Fraud and Error conference will bring together over 350 delegates, 20 high level speakers and 20 service providers to discuss and understand the key challenges facing the sector.

Recent estimates suggest that fraud against the public sector costs public services around £21bn. In looking to deliver better services at a reduced cost, the Government has highlighted fraud as a key area in which major savings can be found and, as reform is implemented across the public sector, ensuring that measures are in place to tackle fraud and error will be crucial.

The Government's priorities are in Collaboration, Assessment of Risk and Measurement of Losses, A Focus on Prevention and taking A Zero Tolerance Approach.

Key areas to be examined include:

  • Welfare reform and the Universal Credit – benefits fraud and tax credits are estimated to cost the public sector around £1.5bn

  • Procurement fraud – estimated to cost central government and local government around £2.4bn in total

  • Social Housing and tenancy fraud – costs local councils around £2m a year each, or £900m in total across the sector

  • Prevention and detection of internally generated fraud – from vetting in payroll and recruitment to credit card and contracts fraud, this is an essential area the government is keen to tackle

  • Debt recovery – looking to recover as much as £1.3bn is outstanding in fines, confiscation and compensation orders in the UK

This conference will provide the perfect opportunity to discuss the future roles of key agencies, and understand what your responsibilities will be moving forward. With excellent debate in the main plenary and more intimate breakout sessions throughout the day, you will learn from best practice and have the opportunity to network with others facing similar challenges.
